Brand-new apartment buildings coming to Spencer

SPENCER, Iowa (KCAU) — Nearly 10 months ago, the town of Spencer was hit by historic flooding, destroying many people’s homes. While the community is still recovering, efforts are underway to build several new apartment buildings for residents.

Many of the buildings impacted by the flooding will soon be torn down and rebuilt.

“The vast majority of the apartment complexes in Spencer were in the area of town that was most significantly hit by the flooding,” said Jason Warren, vice president of the Spencer Economic Development Corporation.

On 1st and 2nd Avenue Southwest sit several apartment buildings that have been abandoned since last June.

“There are seven buildings each,” Warren said. “Each building has four units in them, so there were a total of 28 units. Significantly damaged. All would be considered total losses.”

The Spencer Economic Development Corporation purchased the buildings for $50,000 each. They will soon be repurposed for the community.
